CULTURE IS ABOUT SO MUCH MORE THAN WORDS

Most organisations have, in one way or another, articulated their culture. But many seem to stop with the words they choose for the values, and expect people to be able to simply operate in a defined mode thanks to four statements on the wall or in an annual report.

This does not build a positive, productive and innovative culture.

Culture is the way we DO things, not the way we SAY we do things.

Name It and Do It

We do need to articulate our culture, but at the same time we need to adapt our behaviour, the structures in our organisation and our leadership style to ensure we live up to the promise of our desired culture.

We have worked with many organisations to do this, and we have identified five key areas of focus for taking action on Culture.

  • Leadership: how leaders cast their shadow and role model the desired behaviours
  • Capability: giving people the interpersonal and practical skills they need to operate effectively in the desired culture
  • Engagement: letting people know not just what the culture is but why it has been articulated this way and how they can embed it into their working practices
  • Recruitment: transforming your employer brand and value proposition to ensure your culture takes centre stage
  • Measurement: they say it’s hard to do – hard but not impossible. A focus on culture brings enormous value – find ways to measure it! The key thing is that there is not just one metric for measuring culture – there are many. We need to draw different data points together to paint a picture of impact.
