DIVERSITY & CREATIVITY

One of the biggest hurdles to overcome in idea generating is a tendency to look at what is familiar in order to find solutions to our challenges. As the saying goes: “if you do what you always did, you’ll get what you always got”. So it is important in creative problem solving to push the boundaries of what we think could be possible. And there is a very important principle to consider when embarking on a creative problem solving journey…

As the saying goes: “if you do what you always did, you’ll get what you always got”. So it is important in creative problem solving to push the boundaries of what we think could be possible. And there is a very important principle to consider when embarking on a creative problem solving journey….

Pushing our Creative Boundaries

There are a huge range of great tools to push our creative boundaries.

We can explore other industries and sectors to see how they have solved their challenges, and look for principles to apply to our own.

We can pick a completely random object and explore it with fresh eyes, to identify its principles, attributes and logic to cast new light on our challenge.

We can engage in a creative brainwriting exercise by writing initial ideas on cards and then passing them on to others to build on, enabling them to bring their perspectives and creativity to our initial ideas.

These are just some of a wide selection of well established idea generating techniques and there is something very important that connects them.

They all demand diversity in order to succeed.

That is quite an assertion, so let’s dig into it.

How Diversity Drives Creativity

If Creativity thrives by finding principles outside of our own experience, whether through exploring different industries, brainwriting, or looking at the principles of random items, the more perspectives we can bring into our idea generating session the better.

Engaging with people whose backgrounds are different to ours immediately broadens the experiences in the room and we can draw out principles from one another. More than this, ensuring cognitive diversity (the different ways we think) in an idea generating session enables more perspectives and principles to be uncovered. All of these are valuable in idea generating.
