Many people look up at the great innovators – Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerburg, Larry Paige and Jeff Bezos – and see a lone innovator, working away to deliver world-class innovations. This is a myth. Behind every innovator, there is an innovative team leading an innovative organisation fuelled by the energy of innovative behaviours and optimised through innovative processes. We call this the Innovation Ecosystem.

Direction

Businesses that excel at Innovation have an inspiring vision. This vision is then translated into an innovation strategy. The innovation strategy must be aligned to the delivery of the business strategy and you should be able to articulate clearly how all three support each other.

Environment

Leaders must encourage experimentation and a culture where it is ok to fail. They should enable employees to connect across silos and share knowledge across the business. The imperative to innovate must be central to every leader’s message.

Engine

Innovation may require new metrics to measure success. There are several different structures businesses can put in place to bring new ideas into the business. Partnering with external talent can invigorate your corporate culture and re-inspire plateaued employees.

Enablers

Your people may already hold the answers to your innovation challenges. Your people need to have the skills and tools to deliver innovation. An engaged workforce, where innovation is fun and rewarded, is more likely to offer new and fresh solutions.
